LLNS Supports Science, Math Education with Awards To School Districts, State Agency
March 03, 2008
LIVERMORE, Calif., March 3, 2008 — In support of education in science and math, Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (LLNS) is awarding three gifts of $25,000 to the Livermore and Tracy school districts, as well as California Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA).
LLNS is the contract manager for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). With the LLNL main site located adjacent to the City of Livermore, and its Site 300 experimental test facility located near Tracy, the local school districts are the priority focus of the Laboratory’s K-12 educational outreach. LLNL has close working partnerships with both the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District and the Tracy Unified School District.
The $25,000 donation to each district is to be used for science, technology, engineering and math education.
California Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement, or MESA, is a nationally recognized academic development program supporting thousands of educationally disadvantaged students so they can excel in math and science, as well as graduate with math-based degrees. MESA works with industry partners and the University of California, California State University, California Community Colleges, the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and the State Department of Education. LLNL is an industrial partner of MESA.
“Both LLNS and the Laboratory are committed to promoting science and math education in the community,” said LLNS President and LLNL Director George Miller. “These gifts are an investment in the science and engineering of tomorrow.”
To date, LLNS has contributed more than $1.1 million to the community. In December LLNS matched $1 million in donations to the Laboratory’s HOME Campaign, an annual charitable drive that benefits more than 400 local nonprofit agencies. In addition to education, LLNS has awarded gifts of $10,000 each to Livermore and Tracy performing arts and the Valley Children’s Museum. Later this year LLNS will award an additional $100,000 to select agencies through its LLNS Community Giving Program
The donations come from the fee LLNS receives to manage Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. More information on LLNS and its Community Gift Program is available on the Website, www.llnsllc.com
